Trumpet 2 / Vial 2
Revelation8:8 And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
Revelation 16:3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.
In this second judgement we have something described as a
mountain, which could literally be a meteor or any rock falling
from space into 'the sea'. The fact that it is burning with
fire lends credence to the fact that it is something entering
earths atmosphere. God doesn't necessarily create a comet
or meteor which appears at the edge of earth and then is literally
thrown by an angel. God reserves things to be used in future
events, He times events to happen in His plans and many scientists
and advisors know this. They have been looking for this event
seriously for many years now, certain that it is going to
happen. A rock is somewhere out there with earths name on
it, and at the appropriate time God will command an angel
to either direct, or fulfill the plan God has for that object.
The target for the mountain is the sea, but what sea? The
word sea is thalassa, and if you look at Strong's definition
it can mean sea in general or specifically of the Mediterranean
Sea or the Red Sea. Considering the Book of Revelation is
a future event for the Jews and the Land of Israel, it seems
right that when speaking in local terms, as Revelation does,
that a description of the sea is also local. The Mediterranean
Sea is the most likely sea as it touches the countries which
are all relevant to the end times, including the old Roman
capital and soon to-be new religious capital, Rome. There
are many references to the 'Great Sea' in the Bible and none
to the Mediterranean for obvious reasons.
What happens then at the trumpet, well we see that when the
mountain hits the sea, a third becomes blood or death, and
as it is a third which becomes death then everything which
is in that third dies, which includes creatures people and
ships. This is truly a catastrophic event, but it is limited
to the sea.
The vial or calamity which follows is the death of every
living soul in the sea. The Sea itself is described as the
'blood of a dead man'. This description is very apt. Blood
is looked upon as containing the life of the person, without
it we die, if it is changed or contaminated we die. The blood
of any dead person describes a lifeless substance which has
taken on a new role. Blood is used after death to help in
the breakdown of the body. It helps in the process of decomposition.
So we have a true understanding of the sea here.
